1793-Aug.-18: The Council of Public Safety at Jeremie granted M. de Charmilly full powers to propose formal terms of capitulation to the British authorities in Jamaica. The inhabitants requested British protection in exchange for an oath of allegiance, aiming to deliver themselves from the “tyranny” of the revolutionary government.
