1793-Apr.-13: Jamaican authorities intensified their crackdown on Spanish residents in the parish of St. James following rumors of a conspiracy. The Committee of Secrecy and Safety investigated several Spaniards suspected of holding “dangerous” communications with the enslaved population. This reflected a broader suspicion that the Spanish in Santo Domingo were aiding the French rebels and that this collaboration extended to the Spanish community in Jamaica. The measures included the forced registration of all foreigners and the search for hidden weapons. This localized panic was a manifestation of the “Great Fear” that gripped the Caribbean during the early 1790s.
