1791: Havana reached the status of a teeming entrepôt with a population between 44,000 and 50,000 people including its surrounding suburbs. This growth was the result of a generation of intense economic activity and reform that followed the end of the Seven Years’ War in 1763. During the years of the revolution in Saint-Domingue, the city’s population continued to expand rapidly, doubling in size by 1810. Havana’s massive scale made it one of the few urban rivals to the largest cities in the English-speaking Americas.
