1791-Feb.-22: A copy of the newspaper L’Ami de la Liberté, l’Enemi de la Licence was published in Port of Spain, Trinidad. This paper, whose title reflected the revolutionary struggle between “liberty” and “licentiousness,” was one of the few radical publications from the period that has survived in the historical record. Its presence in Trinidad, a Spanish colony with a large French-speaking population, demonstrated the deep penetration of French republican thought in the eastern Caribbean. The paper served as a vehicle for disseminating the decrees of the National Assembly and local revolutionary sentiment. It was part of a bilingual media landscape that blurred the boundaries between colonial jurisdictions.
