1791-Aug.-22: The Cornwall Chronicle and Jamaica General Advertiser provided some of the earliest English-language coverage of the massive slave uprising in the Plaine du Nord. The reports described the destruction of plantations and the total collapse of white authority in the region around Cap Français. The newspaper’s tone was one of extreme alarm, characterizing the revolt as a “total subversion of order” that threatened every colony in the West Indies. These early accounts were critical in shaping the initial British perception of the Haitian Revolution as a catastrophic event. This source remains a vital record of the immediate regional reaction to the start of the insurrection.
