1790s (Era): Port cities such as Kingston and Cap-Français served as “cauldrons of insurrection” where mobile workers from diverse nations congregated and shared subversive ideas. These urban centers brought sailors, runaway slaves, and free people of color into cooperative laboring relationships that often fostered oppositional political movements. Colonial officials, including the Governor of Jamaica, lamented the “levelling spirit” of the maritime lower class and their readiness for insurrection. These waterfront networks created powerful “cycles of unrest” that challenged linguistic, geographic, and imperial boundaries across the Americas.
