1790-Oct.-15: St. George’s Chronicle and New Grenada Gazette published a report referencing an “aristocratic” French newspaper circulating in Dominica. This highlighted the intense media war taking place in the Caribbean, where various factions published gazettes to promote their specific political agendas. The “aristocratic” papers often sought to defend the old colonial order and the rights of planters against the perceived “licentiousness” of the French National Assembly. These publications were part of a broader network of information exchange that included both radical and reactionary viewpoints. The existence of such papers in a British colony demonstrated the regional reach of French political discourse.
