1790-Dec.-25: Joseph Antonio Vrizar, a Spanish official in Santo Domingo, reported to the Crown on the activities of Vincent Ogé following his failed rebellion in the French part of the island. Ogé had fled across the border into Spanish territory, sparking a diplomatic crisis as French authorities demanded his extradition. Vrizar noted that Ogé’s presence was causing significant excitement among the black and colored populations in the Spanish colony. The Spanish were initially hesitant to return Ogé, fearing that his execution would incite further unrest among their own subjects. This case highlighted the interconnected nature of racial politics on the shared island of Hispaniola.
