1790-Aug.: A well-known slave sailor named William disappeared from the drogger that employed him in Grenada. Late that same year, a crew of slaves aboard the sloop Nancy mutinied against their captain and took over the vessel. This rebellious crew included a native of Nevis, a sailor of the Congo nation, and two men from Virginia. Their owner, Jeremiah Neale, published detailed descriptions of the “pirates” in newspapers from Jamaica to Grenada in a desperate attempt to recover them. Such mutinies demonstrated how black maritime workers used their privileged knowledge of navigation to secure collective liberty.
