1788: Official population figures for the city of Cap Français in Saint-Domingue listed 12,151 residents in the urban center proper. This figure did not include the tens of thousands of people living on nearby plantations whose lives were intimately connected to the city. Cap Français had grown significantly from its origins as a small settlement of fewer than two hundred people in the late seventeenth century. By the late 1780s, it had become the primary revolutionary capital of the Caribbean and a hub for maritime communication.
