1788-Oct.-09: An insurance agreement was finalized for the schooner Fly for a voyage from Bristol to the African coast and onward to American ports. The terms valued the enslaved captives at thirty pounds per head for the purposes of the policy. Notably, the insurers were exempted from losses resulting from the “Insurrection of Negroes” provided such damages did not exceed ten percent of the total value. This document highlights how the risks of captive resistance were formally managed through specialized financial instruments in the late eighteenth century.
