1787: The Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade was established in 1787 as an organizational spearhead for reform. Granville Sharp served as the chairman of this influential committee, which originally included many Quaker activists. Their primary goal was to identify and circulate information that would pressure the British Parliament into legislative action. During the same year, black Londoners began providing eyewitness accounts of the horrors of the trade for publication. This combined effort marked a turning point as the abolitionist movement gained significant popular and political momentum.
