1787: Insurrection aboard the Ville de Basle, bound for Port-au-Prince (voyage 32384)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Port-au-Prince in 1787, the people aboard the Ville de Basle rose against the crew. They had been taken at Porto Novo.

The record gives the numbers as: 270 people were embarked; 236 were landed; 34 died on the crossing.

Captain: Villeneau. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
