1787: Insurrection aboard the Hudibras, bound for Grenada (voyage 81890)
African
On a slaving voyage that ended at Grenada in 1787, the people aboard the Hudibras rose against the crew. They had been taken at Calabar.
The record gives the numbers as: 360 people were embarked; 350 were landed; 10 died on the crossing.
Captain: Evans, Jenkin. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “sold in the Americas after disembarking slaves.”
Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
