1786: Insurrection aboard the Reverseau, bound for Port-au-Prince (voyage 32378)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Port-au-Prince in 1786, the people aboard the Reverseau rose against the crew. They had been taken at Senegal.

The record gives the numbers as: 304 people were embarked; 247 were landed; 57 died on the crossing.

Captain: Bargeau, J. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
