1785-04-26: (John James Audubon Born in Haiti, the Naturalist and Painter Whose Family Would Relocate to France in 1788 and Who Would Immigrate to the United States in 1803, His Haitian Birth Largely Forgotten by American Natural History): On April 26, 1785, John James Audubon was born in Haiti, the illegitimate son of a French naval officer and a Creole woman. His family relocated to France in 1788, fleeing the colony before the Revolution, and Audubon immigrated to the United States in 1803. He became the most famous ornithologist and naturalist-painter in American history, his Birds of America one of the most celebrated works of natural illustration ever produced. His Haitian birth was largely effaced from his public biography, another instance of the broader pattern of erasure by which Haiti’s contributions to the wider world were systematically minimized or forgotten.
