HT-ATST-000280

1784-May–June: Correspondence from slave factors in St. Vincent detailed the difficult logistical and financial challenges of selling captives from the ship Essex of Liverpool. The factors noted that because the captives were “too small” for the Carolina market, they were sold locally on credit, with payments scheduled over eighteen to twenty-four months. They warned the ship’s owners that the financial returns would be lower than expected due to a high proportion of captives who were “Old, Thin” or under-sized. The report also mentioned the death of eleven individuals shortly after their arrival, highlighting the ongoing mortality that occurred even after the Middle Passage was completed.
