1780s (Era): A group of cobreros in Cuba delegated Gregorio Cosme Osorio to travel to Spain to represent their interests at the royal court. The delegation was driven by rumors that the king had granted them freedom and land, only to have his wishes blocked by local officials. Osorio’s reports and letters from Europe helped sustain a spirit of resistance among the runaway communities into the mid-1790s. This effort demonstrated the determination of enslaved people to maintain independent sources of transatlantic information.
