1779: The “Black St. Domingo Legion,” a unit composed of free men of color from Saint-Domingue, played a crucial role in the Siege of Savannah during the American Revolution. These soldiers fought alongside French forces against the British, gaining military experience and exposure to republican ideals. Their participation in the conflict demonstrated the military potential of the gens de couleur and their willingness to fight for political recognition. Upon their return to Saint-Domingue, many of these veterans became key figures in the early stages of the Haitian Revolution. Their service in the Americas created a transnational link between the struggles for liberty in both regions.
