1776: Insurrection aboard the Polly, bound for St. Augustine (voyage 77165)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at St. Augustine in 1776, the people aboard the Polly rose against the crew. They had been taken at Senegal.

The record gives the numbers as: 214 people were embarked; 198 were landed.

Captain: Reilly, John. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “captured and recaptured after disembarking slaves.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
