1775: Insurrection aboard the Brune, bound for Port-au-Prince (voyage 31929)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Port-au-Prince in 1775, the people aboard the Brune rose against the crew. They had been taken at Senegambia and offshore Atlantic.

The record gives the numbers as: 77 people were embarked; 66 were landed.

Captain: Caillot, Louis-Thibault. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
