1775-Fall: In the fall of 1775, unemployed seamen in Liverpool initiated violent protests against the exploitative conditions of the slave trade. Marching under a red flag, they expressed grievances over low wages and the cruel treatment typical on slaving vessels. The protesters effectively pulled down the rigging of slave ships at anchor and attacked the local Exchange. They also sacked and burned the homes of prominent merchants and shipowners who profited from the trade. These actions demonstrated a growing internal opposition to the slave trade from within the maritime working class.
