1773-Jan.: A vibrant watercolor titled “View of Cap-Français and the Marie Séraphique of Nantes” was created to document the opening of a slave sale in Saint-Domingue. The vessel had recently delivered 340 captives from Angola, with a demographic ratio of twice as many males as females being offered for sale. Potential buyers were ferried to the ship at anchor in small boats, while others waited under a canopy on board to bid for captives gathered behind a dividing barrier on the deck. Tables at the bottom of the painting provide statistical summaries of the trade, including the specific goods exchanged both in Africa and at the port.
