1771: Insurrection aboard the Two Brothers, bound for Charleston (voyage 91735)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Charleston in 1771, the people aboard the Two Brothers rose against the crew. They had been taken at Gambia.

The record gives the numbers as: 245 people were embarked; 200 were landed.

Captain: Glenn, Hugh. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “shipwrecked or destroyed, after disembarkation.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
