1771: Insurrection aboard the Saint René, bound for Cap Français (voyage 33262)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Cap Français in 1771, the people aboard the Saint René rose against the crew. They had been taken at Whydah.

The record gives the numbers as: 325 people were embarked; 288 were landed; 37 died on the crossing.

Captain: Chateaubriand du Plessis. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
