1771: Insurrection aboard the African Queen, bound for Saint John (voyage 91687)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Saint John in 1771, the people aboard the African Queen rose against the crew. They had been taken at Kissey River.

The record gives the numbers as: 33 people were embarked; 28 were landed.

Captain: North, Thomas. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “cut off by Africans from shore. Recaptured and landed slaves in Americas.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
