1771-1773: During the years between 1771 and 1773, the British slave trade reached an all-time peak in maritime activity. More than one hundred vessels per year cleared from Liverpool, which functioned as Europe’s busiest slave-trading port. Many additional ships departed from London and Bristol to embark on the first leg of the Atlantic triangle. This intense volume of traffic solidified Britain’s dominance in the global market for African labor. The lucrative nature of this commerce ensured that merchants regained their prewar commercial positions quickly after the conclusion of conflicts.
