1770: Insurrection aboard the Saint Nicolas, bound for Cap Français (voyage 31566)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Cap Français in 1770, the people aboard the Saint Nicolas rose against the crew. They had been taken at Gorée.

The record gives the numbers as: 250 people were embarked; 177 were landed; 73 died on the crossing.

Captain: De Bellouan, Pierre. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
