1769: Attack from shore on the King David, bound for Jamaica (voyage 17703)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Jamaica in 1769, the King David was attacked from the shore. The people aboard had been taken at Calabar.

The record gives the numbers as: 207 people were embarked; 157 were landed.

Captain: Patey, Benjamin. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “shipwrecked or destroyed, after disembarkation.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
