1767-July-29: France further liberalized its colonial trade policies by issuing a royal decree that made Môle St. Nicolas a free port. This designation allowed foreign vessels of over one hundred tons to enter the port and trade wood, tar, livestock, and hides. While the decree permitted these ships to take away molasses, strict restrictions remained against the trade of flour, foodstuff, sugar, or coffee. This opening was a strategic move to benefit from the growing maritime traffic in the Windward Passage . It also served to further integrate the economy of Saint-Domingue with the needs of the neighboring North American colonies.
