1767-Jan.-28: The editorial concluded its economic series with a call for “patriotic resolutions” to counter the spirit of frivolity pervading the French Empire. It warned that neighboring nations were increasingly restricting their trade to only essential items of necessity, leaving France at a disadvantage. The author lamented that the enormous weight of luxury consumption was borne entirely by the domestic economy, leading to losses that increased daily. Such appeals to civic virtue and protectionism were common intellectual themes in the decade preceding the colony’s revolutionary upheavals.
