1767-Jan.-28: Manufacturing sector reports highlighted a growing tension between workers in the economy of necessity versus those in the luxury trade. Manufacturers of essential goods expressed difficulty in retaining workers who envied the higher wages of luxury artisans. Despite their higher nominal earnings, luxury workers were often described as less personally stable or truly wealthy than their counterparts in essential industries. This labor disparity was presented as a systemic issue that threatened the core productivity and social order of the state.
