1767-Jan.-20: The Bordeaux merchant ship L’Actif, commanded by Captain Rosain, departed from the port of Cap-Français bound for France. It was preceded on January 17th by the departures of La Marquise-de-Brancas for Honfleur and L’Astre for Bordeaux. These sailings were the culmination of weeks of loading colonial wealth such as sugar, coffee, and indigo for the European market. The steady rhythm of these departures was the primary engine for the transfer of wealth from Saint-Domingue to the French metropole.
