1767-Jan.-14: Gabriel, an enslaved man of the Arada nation, was reported as a runaway belonging to Mr. Mocar in Cap-Français. His notice provided a specific physical identifier, noting that he had a clubfoot, in addition to his brand “MOCAR.” The Arada nation was highly represented in Saint-Domingue and often noted for their distinct religious and cultural practices. Despite his physical impairment, Gabriel participated in the widespread practice of flight to escape the conditions of the plantation city.
