1767-Jan.-14: A private individual in Cap-Français advertised a cash offer for the purchase of twelve to fifteen “Negres de Place” (domestic slaves) who were already acclimated to the country. Interested sellers were directed to contact M. la Caussade at the office of M. Birot, a merchant on Rue du Conseil. This demand for local-born or “seasoned” slaves reflects a preference for workers who had already survived the disease environment of the colony. Such domestic labor was essential for the operation of wealthy urban households in the colonial capital.
