1767-Jan.-07: Florentine, an enslaved woman of the Mina nation, fled from the service of Mr. Bazane in Cap-Français. She carried the brand “BAILLY” on both of her breasts, which may have referred to a previous owner or a specific plantation estate. Captives of the Mina nation were frequently noted in colonial records for their distinct cultural backgrounds and visibility in the labor market. Her inclusion in the runaway list proves that enslaved women were active participants in the struggle for liberty through flight.
