1767-Jan.-07: Augustin, a 24-year-old Creole man, was reported as a runaway from the plantation of Madame Saint-Martin at Grand Saint-Louis. Standing five feet and one inch tall, he carried the brand “LMP” on his left breast as a permanent mark of his enslaved status. His flight demonstrates that the prospect of freedom was a powerful motivator even for those who had spent their entire lives within the colony. The gazette’s runaway lists are a vital source for understanding the demographics and the individual stories of resistance in Saint-Domingue.
