1767-Jan.-07 (approx.): Reports from Italy described a severe grain shortage threatening the Papal States following a series of poor harvests. To mitigate the crisis, the Congregation of Provisions met daily to coordinate imports and stabilize prices using surplus crops from Spain. During this time, Pope Clement XIII also appointed two new cardinals, Jean-Octave Bufalini and Jean-Charles Boschi, to fill vacancies in the Sacred College. These news items connected the Mediterranean world to the broader Atlantic awareness of Saint-Domingue’s colonial readers.
