1767-Jan.-06: The slave ship Le Saint-Jean-Baptiste, out of Nantes and under the command of Captain Chevalier Houet, arrived at the port of Léogane. The vessel completed its journey from the coast of Angola with 565 African captives on board. This significant influx of labor was destined for the plantations of the Western Province during the height of the colony’s productivity. The local gazette meticulously recorded these arrivals to facilitate the organized sale of human property to colonial residents.
