1767-Feb. (approx.): Reports from Italy confirmed that the Congregation of the Annone successfully procured grain for Rome and the Papal States, stabilizing the local food supply. However, the Order of Malta faced a continuing scarcity and was forced to send Chevalier Mirelly to Genoa to make significant purchases. Meanwhile, the Republic of Genoa issued an ordinance prohibiting its nobles from joining the Order of Malta without government permission to prevent the loss of patrician families. These Mediterranean geopolitical shifts were of high interest to the readers of Saint-Domingue because of their impact on Atlantic provisions and colonial trade networks.
