1767-Feb. (approx.): The Portuguese monarchy created a new position of Governor-General for the Azores islands, appointing Don Antoine d’Almanda to reside at the capital of Angra. To secure the islands, the King also ordered the deployment of two infantry regiments consisting of 420 men each. Furthermore, the Portuguese government resolved to abolish the title of Viceroy for Goa, replacing it with the rank of Captain-General to be held by Don Bernard de Mello. These administrative reforms aimed to centralize control over Portugal’s Atlantic and Indian Ocean territories during a period of imperial reorganization.
