1767-Feb. (approx.): Telemaque, a man of the Nago nation branded with “CHARRIER” and “AU CAP,” fled from the service of M. Saint-Denis at Fort-Dauphin. Standing five feet tall, he was also branded on his left breast with the letters “NHL” as a permanent mark of his enslaved status. Simultaneously, a young Creole girl named Marie-Thérèse, aged 8 or 9, was arrested in the Limbé district while her Congo-born mother successfully escaped. This tragic separation illustrates the extreme risks families took in their attempts to secure liberty from the plantation regime.
