1767-Feb.-14 (approx.): Significant naval engineering trials were conducted in France to test a revolutionary new maritime bilge pump. The trials demonstrated that a single sailor using the new design could pump as much water as twelve men using four standard pumps. A larger version for warships produced six barrels of water per minute, significantly outperforming existing royal naval equipment tested at Brest. This technological advancement promised to greatly enhance the safety and longevity of French vessels operating in the challenging Atlantic environment.
