1767-Feb. (approx.): Captain Samoual of the ship Le Duc de Choiseul reported the loss of a small packet on the docks of Cap-Français. The packet contained a collection of gazettes and other periodic journals from the year 1766. Such materials were highly valued by ship commanders and colonial residents as a record of historical events and maritime regulations. The search for these missing documents underscores the importance of printed information in the intellectual and professional life of the Atlantic world.
