1767-Feb. (approx.): Junon, also known as Marie-Jeanne, an enslaved woman of the Adia nation branded “LAROVSEERE,” was reported as a runaway in Cap-Français. At the time of her escape, she was wearing an iron collar, a punitive device used by owners to prevent flight and identify troublesome workers. Her notice was placed by the Sieur Lerouseliere, who lived near the Morne-des-Capucins. Despite the physical restraint of the collar, she sought her freedom, demonstrating the limits of mechanical coercion in the colonial slave system.
