1767-Feb. (approx.): A group of four enslaved men, including two Congo men named Atis and Hipolite, escaped from the plantation of Louis Magnan in Gonaïves. They were joined by two Creole-born men named Antoine and Noel, and the group was believed to be hiding in the lower Artibonite region. Their owner offered a tiered reward system, paying 120 livres for each individual capture or 600 livres for the recovery of all four together. This collective flight highlights the cross-ethnic cooperation between African-born and colonial-born enslaved people in their pursuit of liberty.
