1767-Feb. (approx.): Jean-Baptiste, a 33-year-old man of the Congo nation branded “IPF,” escaped from M. Barbe, a master surgeon in Limonade. Having formerly belonged to another surgeon in the Cap, Jean-Baptiste possessed the specialized skills required for bloodletting and basic medical procedures. A significant reward of 25 piastres was offered for his capture, reflecting the high value of enslaved individuals with medical expertise. Enslaved people who acquired professional skills were often able to maintain greater mobility and independence before choosing to flee permanently.
