1767-Feb.-02: The merchant vessels La Cherie from Bordeaux and La Côte-d’Or from Honfleur docked at Cap-Français carrying a combined 380 African captives. The captives, brought from the Gold Coast, were assigned to the merchants Marette, Faucon, and le Grand for public sale. Sales were scheduled to begin the following Friday, illustrating the rapid commercial turnover of human property in the colony’s economic heart. This steady influx of labor was necessary to sustain the high output of the northern sugar and coffee plantations.
