1766-Oct. (approx.): M. Hardion, the esteemed Keeper of Books for the King’s Cabinet and a member of both the Académie Française and the Academy of Inscriptions, passed away at the age of 81. His death created vacancies within France’s most prestigious intellectual circles, sparking significant intrigue and competition among potential successors. Public opinion in Paris strongly favored the celebrated M. Thomas to fill the seat at the Académie Française. News of such high-level academic successions kept the literate elite of Saint-Domingue connected to the intellectual life of the French metropole.
