1766-Jun. (approx.): M. le Prince de Conti commissioned the construction of a decorated fountain in the town of Pougues after visiting the region for the waters. The fountain featured a simple and tasteful inscription in French that compared its never-drying source to the Prince’s own benevolence. This monument served as a testament to the Prince’s patronage and the perceived elegance of the French language in monumental inscriptions. News of such aristocratic architectural contributions in the metropole was shared with Saint-Domingue’s elite to reinforce cultural bonds with France.
